Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these medications should be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
